Cape Town History

Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to reach Cape Town in 1488. He named the town Cabo das Tormentas or the "Cape of Storms." Later, King John II of Portugal renamed the town as Cabo da Boa Esperança or "Cape of Good Hope" because of the great optimism caused by the opening of a sea route to the East and to India.
