As the capital, Honiara has a handful of hotels and transportation services to connect you to the rest of the country but not too many sights to behold or things to do.
The capital is close to the spot of the ‘40s Guadalcanal World War II campaign in which the Allied Forces used Guadalcanal as a launching pad before meeting the Japanese in a bloody episode. This history led to a trove of WWII residues such as the US and the Japanese Memorials, the Japanese command post of Gifu, and the Iron Bottom Sound, a ship cemetery and diving spot.
The city's National Art Gallery is a cultural center with exhibits of paintings, so is the National Museum, which has a national treasure of dance and body ornaments, archaeology, weaponry and traditional currencies. The Central Market also presents loots like handspun jewelry and crafts.
Past the national prison are the Botanical Gardens, an herbarium with local orchids, bushes and trees pandemic in the country’s forests. Getting wet outside of Honiara is easy as the Tenaru falls and the beaches of Bonegi, Tangisaliu and Turtle are just near for pleasures like palm tree climbing, picnic and canoeing. Saltwater crocodiles, though, are an everywhere scare.
