Perhaps Singapore's most famous landmark, the Raffles Hotel is a colonial styled hotel in the country. Construction of the hotel was completed in 1887 and was named after the founder of modern Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles. The hotel was founded by the Sarkies Brothers as they opened it as a 10 room bungalow located at Bras Basah Road, which was originally a seaside location but reclamation efforts resulted in the hotel being 500 meters away from the shoreline. The Raffles Hotel was restored several times notably in 1991. Some trivial facts about the hotel is that this was where the Singapore Sling was invented, this was where the last tiger in Singapore was shot dead and made extinct and this was the site of the oldest girl's school in Singapore.
