Climbing a meteorite in Masbate City

If you are looking for a unique adventure, try climbing a large meteorite in Masbate City. I’m not sure if it’s a real meteorite, but locals swear that it is. Likewise, upon looking at its surroundings, it’s a vast plain all over, and the hill (the so-called meteorite) is the lone thing in the middle of the plain, so maybe it’s the real deal. My guide told me that this meteorite, which probably hit Masbate millions of years ago, flattened the mountains and hills in the area, so only a vast plain was left behind. A closer look at the meteorite reveals its many holes, as if it really is from outer space.

The meteorite has two stalactite caves by the summit, and to get there, you should get real mountaineers as guides before you can climb. The climb is moderate to intensive, and you should be equipped with harnesses to survive the steep portions and the sharp rocks. Nevertheless, after braving the cliff sides, you will be rewarded by the beautiful stalactite formations inside the first cave, which locals nicknamed as “Sabungan” (cockpit) since local children reportedly hear noises there that seem like people placing their bets on the fighting roosters. Above the Sabungan cave is the Summit Cave that will give you an aerial view of the vast plain surrounding the meteorite. The cave is somewhat hollow but it’s still worth to see for the vistas it provides.

Even if you would not climb the meteorite, it’s still worth watching how little children (with ages 8 to 11) climb it like professionals, without any harnesses or equipment!
