The Glossary
Originally built out of hardwood, earth and nipa, the Basilica del Santo Niño is the oldest church in the Philippines. It was completed on April 28, 1565 by Andres de Urdaneta, an Augustinian priest. Later, the church was rebuilt using hard stone as per the orders of Valdes y Tamon, then governor of Cebu in 1735. The construction of the new church was completed in 1739. It was elevated to the rank of a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI in 1965.
The Basilica del Santo Niño is built on the spot where an image of the Santo Niño, which was a sculpture of the Christ Child Jesus, was left by the Magellan expedition in 1521. There is also a museum inside the basilica where tourists can find several religious artifacts donated by several people over the years.
