The Glossary
Found in the Cuba Mall in Wellington is the Bucket Fountain. This is an iconic sculpture in the city that consists of several buckets that slowly fill with water until they eventually tip over and the water fills another bucket and that then tips and so on. Basically this is a fountain that works on the principles of kinetic energy and gravity. It was built in 1969 and designed by Burren and Keen.
Sometimes, people would add soap detergent in the water of the Bucket Fountain. This will spread bubbles all over the mall which is a common sight every Friday or Saturday night. In 2003, the buckets were turned around by the Wellington City Council. They did this so that the buckets would intentionally spill water onto the pavement. Even before this was done, most of the water wouldn't really reach the bottom buckets and simply splash onto onlookers.
A popular incident regarding the Bucket Fountain was when Elijah Wood, an American actor, urinated on the top bucket. He acknowledged this in an interview in the United States.
