The Malays hail Sungai Kinabatangan as the longest river in Sabah which teems with life despite its murky waters. Having a bountiful treasure of rare plants and endangered animals such as pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and orangutans, Sungai Kinabatangan also houses an astounding diversity of bird species. Sadly, in the last half a century, the area has been ravaged by illegal land-clearing and logging. The Orang Sungais and mixed minorities of Dusun, Suluk, and Bajaus inhibit the upper reaches of the river.
