The Makam Mahsuri Memorial is the final resting place of the famous female legend known as Makam Mahsuri. According to the story of the locals, Makam Mahsuri was a very beautiful woman from Phuket. Because of this, she was sought after by every male on the island including the chief of that time who wanted to make her his second wife, which drew the objection, and jealousy, of the first.
After some time, Makam Mahsuri married a young man. Later, the husband went away and while he was away, a story teller came to town. The story teller captivated everyone including Makam Mahsuri who offered her home to the story teller since he had no place to go.
Still fuming with jealousy, the first wife of the chief accused Makam Mahsuri of adultery and the chief condemned her to death. When she was stabbed, white blood gushed out of the wound as a sign of her innocence. As she died, she cursed the land for seven generations. This was followed by an invasion from Ligor which indeed laid waste to Langkawi.
A few years ago, the seven generations ended, almost the same time Langkawi became a tourist destination. Truth or legend, fact or coincidence, the Makam Mahsuri Memorial commemorates this story and the young woman killed in cold blood.
