Built in 1912 by Mercantile Bank, Bank Kerapu is the first stone edifice found on Kelantan. The name kerapu means rough surface in the local dialect, hence the name.
When the Japanese occupied the area in 1941, the building was used as a secret police station. It resumed its role of a bank after the war until 1992 when it was converted into a war memorial or war museum.
Bank Kerapu currently houses more than a thousand items related to the Second World War. The exhibit includes war photos, memorabilia, artifacts and articles about the war. There is also a bicycle used by the Japanese soldiers in the museum.
