Construction of the Istana Bukit Serene was completed in 1933. It is the official residence and royal palace of the Sultan of Johor. Its tower raising 35 meters high, it has a bird's eye view of the surrounding area. It also functions as a major landmark of Johor Bahru.

Visitors to the Istana Bukit Serene will also be treated to a beautiful garden, which some say is one of the best in all of Johor. Inside the palace, the walls are finely decorated with several carvings which are great examples of Malaya art. Aside from that, the palace also gives a glimpse of the Royal Family's history and lifestyle.
