First built during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Ban Hin Kiong Temple is more than 300 years old. It is a place of worship for the followers of Tridhana and is the first of its kind in Manado as well as the surrounding area. Since its construction, it has become the symbol or the landmark of the city.
During February, the Toa Peh Kong festival is held which centers on the Ban Hin Kiong Temple. Highlights of the festival include the image of a ten meter dragon being displayed. It is also when the Kuda Locia, a parade of young boys riding on horseback while dressed in colorful costumes and Pikulan which is a parade of little girls riding on carrying poles intricately decorated with flowers. Another interesting tradition is Ince Pia wherein a man continuously hits his back with a sword without getting injured, displaying his faith.
