The Gereja Sion or Black Portuguese Church is a well preserved building at the heart of Jakarta. Sporting baroque style architecture, this is the oldest known church in the city. The interior of the church still houses an 18th century pipe organ, copper chandeliers and several galleries.
The Gereja Sion was designed by Eqout Verhagen from Rotterdam. The church served the Eurasian slaves who were transported here from other Portuguese controlled areas from India and Ceylon. Over the years, the church has been renovated and rebuilt several times to keep it in top condition. The last major renovation occurred in 1978.
