Located in New Delhi, the Jama Masjid is currently the largest mosque in India. For that reason alone this mosque has become quite an attraction. The mosque, which was built by the great Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, can accommodate more than 25,000 devotees at a time. However, the Jama Masjid has also been a victim of time. The iron fastening the stones together have corroded over time. There are also outside factors which affected the mosque such as smoke produced by nearby power stations damaged the stones used in the mosque as well as damage contributed by war. The first restoration effort was carried out in 1817 by King Akbar II and again in 1833 by the British Government. There has always been a desire to protect the Jama Masji mosque so that it remains just as spectacular in years to come.
