The Drum Tower in Xian is located right across the Bell Tower. They share a similar structure with one another. The name is derived from the huge drum on top of the tower which is struck during dawn and again at sunset to indicate the day's end.
The ground floor of the Drum Tower houses several large drums each with beautiful decoration of calligraphy. Tourists are not allowed to beat on any of the drums in order to preserve them; but there is a small drum which you can beat on and take a picture with for a price.
Further inside the Drum Tower is a museum of drums. Some of these date back from thousands of years ago. There is also a drum performance held every day in the tower.
