The Shanghai Museum in Huangpu District was opened to the public in 1952. It first occupied the former Shanghai Racecourse club house. This is an art museum which features interesting traditional Chinese artwork. They house well over 120,000 pieces of art pieces which include ancient coins, calligraphy, jade ornaments, bronze sculptures, ceramics, seals and paintings. There are 11 permanent exhibits in the museum which focus on each type of artwork and three galleries are dedicated to temporary exhibits.
By 1959, the Shanghai Museum was moved to Zhonghui Building which was occupied by bank offices and insurance companies. The current location of the Shanghai Museum was allocated by the Shanghai Municipal Government in 1992.
