The Glossary
menlou - "gateways, pathways, or narrow streets that may serve as footpaths or traveling routes for people and small vehicles."
No trip to Beijing would be complete without visiting the Forbidden City. This was the home of the emperor during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Located to the north of the equally famous Tiananmen Square, it is the largest palace complex in the world covering 74 hectares. The whole city is surrounded by a moat as well as ten meter high walls. There are two entry points to the city as well known as the Gate of Divine Might and the Tiananmen Gate. The southern court of the Forbidden City is where the emperor at that time would exercise his power and his duties to run the country while the northern part of the city is where he lived along with the Royal Family. The Forbidden City is now open both to locals and foreigners.
