The Niunjie Mosque is one of China's oldest and most historical mosques. It was first built during the Liao Dynasty in 996 by the local Muslim community. Any other style other than traditional Chinese architecture was forbidden in building the mosque. During the Ming Dynasty, the Niunjie Mosque was rebuilt. The first thing tourists and visitors will notice upon entering the mosque is the Watching Moon Tower which is a two story building standing more than 10 meters tall. It was used to observe the position of the moon in the past. The Niunjie Mosque is one of the most unique buildings not just in Beijing, but in the whole country. Those planning to go there should remember that there is a dress code which does not allow shorts or skirts. Some areas are likewise not open to the general public.
