Beware of free art gallery tours
enfant_terrible
You may be invited by a local to go on a “free” visit of an art gallery. Be cautious that this “art gallery” might be nothing but a shabby art shop with tacky, substandard, or copied Chinese art. The worst part is that you might be pressured to buy any of the art items for a very high price. If this happens, politely get out of the gallery as fast as you could.
If you really want to visit a nice art gallery around town, ask for referrals from your hotel or guide. You may also do prior research by visiting the websites of art festivals in Beijing and look for the names of participating art galleries in the festival. Attending an art festival is the best way to see many art galleries in one destination.
If you are in tourist areas like Beijing, pamphlets showing a list of destinations, including art galleries, are most likely scattered in restaurants, souvenir shops, police outposts, and major landmarks around the area.
