Garachico Travel Guide

/ Africa / Canary Islands / Tenerife / Garachico / Introduction

Under the shade of a 1500-foot cliff lies the coastal town of Garachico, arguably the least spoiled of Tenerife's cities because of its intact environment and Spanish culture.

Influenced by Spain

Spanish phrasebooks could be a big help in this largely Spanish-speaking city, which received a Gold Medal of Fine Arts in 1980 from Spain's king because of its efforts to preserve its whitewashed courtyard-style houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and piscinas or volcanic coves, and old church and monastery. Hidden shops, ancient watermill houses, a small museum, and a harbor-side fort are also among the gems tucked in between the city's backstreets.

A collection of rock pools

The town may not have a real beach to speak of as the coastline is peppered with volcanic debris, but these give the city its unique charm. In fact, these rock outcrops have trapped in seawater, creating natural rock pools that are now popular among swimmers and line-fishers alike. Outside of these rock pools are large Atlantic swells that may tickle the fantasy of a surf buff.
