The Independence Monument of Phnom Penh found in the city's center was built in 1958 to commemorate their independence from France. Their independence was given to them following their royal crusade for independence. This 20 meter tall monument made out of red stone was erected by King Norodom Suramarit. The design of this lotus-shaped stupa is reminiscent of the Khmer architectural style of the Angkor Wat. It stands as a memorial to the fact that Cambodia's war is now over. Today, the Independence Monument is a common place for the youth to hang out and feel the cool evening breeze. It is also the center of activity during the celebration of the country's Independence Day.
