Found on top of a hill in Thimpu is Changangkha Lhakhang. This temple is the oldest in the city and was built around the 12th century. Hovering above a ridge, the temple offers a panoramic view of Thimpu. The temple was extensively renovated in 1998 to preserve it.
The Changangkha Lhakhang was built by Lama Phajo Drukgom Zhigpo and chose this site for his temple. The central statue os a form of Avolokitesawara which has eleven heads and thousands of arms.
Prayer books which are a bit bigger than the usual Buddhist text are also found in the temple. Prayers are also inscribed inside and outside the walls of the Changangkha Lhakhang.
